St. Petersburg, FL– October 11, 2014 – All Children’s Hospital will hold its 2nd annual Teen Chili Cook-off Challenge in partnership with Kohl’s Cares as a part of the Kohl’s Cooks for Kids program. Dozens of local teens will chop, season and simmer their way through this competition in hopes of taking home an award for the best healthy chili recipe. The Teen Chili Cook-off Challenge is being held in conjunction with the St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue’s 25th annual fire prevention block party.
A panel of judges, including City of St. Petersburg Deputy Mayor Kanika Tomalin, Sarah Krieger, Fit4AllTeens and Fit4Allkids nutrition instructor and national spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, as well as the firefighters from St. Pete Fire and Rescue. The team with the highest score will take home the top prize – an opportunity to cook their recipe for local firefighters and a behind-the-scenes tour of the fire house.
Associates from several Tampa Bay area Kohl’s department stores will also attend and present a check to All Children’s Hospital. Since 2006, Kohl’s Cares has donated more than $1.2 million to All Children’s Hospital. The Kohl’s Cares donation supports the Kohl’s Cooks for Kids family cooking classes, the free “Yum Yum! Let’s Make Some!” cookbook and community events such as the Teen Chili Cook-off Challenge. Each of the activities provide young chefs with fun and healthy opportunities to focus on good nutrition and working together in the kitchen in hopes that when kids are involved in the food preparation process, they are more likely to make healthy choices.

The Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind
invites the public to attend a special White Cane Safety and Awareness Day
event being held on Wednesday, October 15th from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30
p.m. at the West Pasco Government Center, 7530 Little Road in New Port Richey
(Little Road & Citizens Drive). The City of New Port Richey has signed a
proclamation stating that October 15th, 2014 is White Cane Safety
and Awareness Day. The Lighthouse event is being held to celebrate this day and
to raise awareness about white canes and pedestrian safety. For more
information about the White Cane Awareness event, please call the Lighthouse’s
Port Richey Office at 727-815-0303 or email events@lvib.org.
White Cane Day has been celebrated since 1964 when a
joint resolution of Congress was signed into law. The purpose of the day is to
increase the public’s knowledge about the white cane--the device used by
persons with visual impairments to help them travel safely and live independently.
The white cane is the universal symbol for blindness or visual impairment. It
is a common misconception that the white cane is only used by those who are
totally blind. It is also used by individuals who have some remaining vision.
Some white canes are long and help persons who are
visually impaired to find obstacles that may be in their way or warn them when
they are approaching a curb. Other white canes are short, and serve as a signal
to others that the cane user is visually impaired.
While many visually impaired individuals use white
canes, many others use guide dogs. These are dogs that are specially trained to
lead blind or visually impaired travelers around obstacles and assist with
street crossings.
Each state has laws that pertain to pedestrians with
white canes or guide dogs. In Florida, the law states that drivers must come to
a full stop when there is a pedestrian using a white cane or guide dog while
crossing, or attempting to cross a public street or highway. For more
information about white canes and guide dogs, visit the Lighthouse website at www.lvib.org.
More details to come...
In recognition of National Disability Employment
Awareness Month, the public is invited to attend an open house to be held at
the Lighthouse Opportunity Center, 5944 Pine Hill Road in Port Richey on
Wednesday, October 15th from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. There, also,
will be a ribbon cutting at 1:00 p.m. as the Lighthouse is welcomed into the
Trinity Odessa Chamber of Commerce.
The Lighthouse Opportunity Center is a small
manufacturing and order fulfillment center that provides employment to persons
who are visually impaired and blind. There is an over 70% unemployment rate for
persons who are visually impaired and blind, and the Lighthouse Opportunity
Center’s goal is to reduce this statistic in the Tampa Bay area. Visitors to
the Center can learn about Lighthouse products that provide employment for the visually
impaired and blind as well as the other services provided by the lighthouse. For more information about the open house,
please call the Lighthouse’s Port Richey Office at 727-815-0303 or email events@lvib.org.
You may also visit the Lighthouse website at www.lvib.org
and click on Products to learn more about the Lighthouse Opportunity Center and
supporting the employment of persons who are visually impaired and blind.

Free Event. Author and local historian Jeff Cannon will provide insight and a fascinating look back into the rich heritage of New Port Richey and Hudson, FL.
Cannon provides a window into New Port Richey's vibrant past that is still evident today through the numerous landmark buildings that remain. The city's founding fathers envisioned a great city with potential for progress and growth. Today, city leaders are looking to an era of redevelopment to reach and exceed those vast expectations set so long ago.
Cannon traces his family's history through text and more than 200 photographs. He will present the places, faces and events that have shaped the community's history and character.
Much of the Old South ambiance has passed from these two areas with development, as has much of their history. Cannon has recaptured it in his two keepsake volumes. Attendees will be transported back to yesteryear at this informative literary event.

The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk is the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation, uniting more than 300 communities to finish the fight.
Making Strides walkers turn awareness into action by helping raise more than $60 million for the American Cancer Society each year to save more lives from breast cancer. Today, we’re leading the way in transforming breast cancer from deadly to treatable and from treatable to preventable. The progress we are making together is nothing short of remarkable. 90th Anniversary
Celebration
The City of New Port Richey Plans 90th Anniversary with Community
Celebration
New Port Richey,
Florida - Ninety
years ago on October 27th, 1924 is
the official day that the area known as New Port Richey officially became a
City. While the area looks different today than it did nearly 90 years
ago, some things have stayed the same. The City of New Port Richey, while
encompassing a portion of US Highway 19 today, still maintains its quaint
downtown district and boasts about its beautiful parks and river that runs through
the town. It is a city that has seen change and growth and embraces it
all.
The City of New Port Richey
plans to celebrate the 90th Anniversary
of the City by hosting a community celebration on Monday, October 27th.
Activities planned include historic movies in the Richey Suncoast Theater,
activities and a historic trolley tour on the Friendly Kia Trolley by the West
Pasco Historical Society, and an early evening gathering on Railroad Square
that will include entertainment and a proclamation by the current Mayor of the
City of New Port Richey, Rob Marlowe.
The event is still in the
planning stages and a final schedule of events will be available in the coming
weeks. We encourage everyone to mark the event date on their calendars
and plan to come and help celebrate the City of New Port Richey’s 90th Anniversary Celebration.
More information on the event will be available on the City’s website at: http://citynpr.org/Calendar.
